Indians can now travel to Canada if they stop over at a third country and undergo the RT-PCR test. As popular stopovers in the Middle East like Turkey, Dubai and Abu Dhabi have relaxed their norms, Indians may now travel to Canada via these routes. Earlier, these Middle Eastern airports were closed for Indians. So travellers from India, mainly students, took a route via countries like Egypt and Mexico, where they underwent RT-PCR test and continued their journey to Canada.
The prices of air tickets to Canada have also come down. The return fare for a Mumbai-Toronto trip via London is around Rs 80000-Rs 90000 at present. But with the airports in the Middle East now open for Indians, the prices have dropped significantly.
Among the vaccines available in India, Covishield is the only vaccine accepted in Canada. The travellers must be fully vaccinated and must have taken an RT-PCR test not more than 72 hours before arrive in Canada. The passengers must also be asymptomatic. Besides, they must have uploaded the proof of vaccination and other relevant information on the ArriveCAN app.
Those who are accompanied by children below the age of 12 need not undergo quarantine. But children aged above 12 and dependent children above the age of 18 need to follow quarantine rules.
However, direct flights from India are banned by Canada till September 21. It was on April 23, Canada banned all flights from India as the second wave of COVID-19 hit India. The ban has been extended several times since then.
At the same time, India expressed its disappointment about the extension of flight ban to the Canadian government. Canada has a significant Indian diaspora and a lot of Indian students are studying in Canadian higher education institutions. So the Indian government is seeking the resumption of flights. The country pointed out that the drop in positivity rate, expansion of testing regime and proof of vaccination available digitally via the Cowin app. However, it is expected that direct flights from India to Canada could be resumed soon.
